Puerh tea, a specialty of Yunnan Province, is a Chinese national geographical indication product. Puerh tea comes from large tea trees that can reach heights of up to 16 meters, with a trunk diameter of 90 centimeters, tender branches featuring slight fuzz, and white downy buds. The leaves are thin and leathery, elliptical in shape. It is primarily produced in the ancient forests of southwestern Yunnan. These old trees can grow up to 17 meters in height, with a trunk diameter exceeding 1 meter. Puerh tea cultivation has spread widely, with tea trees originally introduced from Yunnan to India and Myanmar.
Puerh tea offers a diverse range of consumption methods, suitable for both clear and blended infusions. Its tea liquor is rich, orange-yellow, with a strong and enduring aroma, a unique fragrance, and a bold and lasting flavor. It can be steeped repeatedly.
On May 13, 2008, the former General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine approved the geographical indication protection for "Puerh tea." In November 2019, it was included in the Chinese Agricultural Brand Catalog.
